Early Warning Risk Modeling of Climate-Induced Forced Displacement

© OCHA | Giles Clarke

ABOUT

CLIFDEW-GRID, developed by UNHCR in collaboration with the University of California, Irvine, addresses the growing challenge of climate-induced forced displacement through the first risk index of its kind. Using advanced analytics and forecasting methods, it provides subnational insights into where displacement risks are emerging. Initially applied in Western and Eastern Africa, the platform strengthens understanding of climate-related displacement dynamics and supports CRAF’d partners with a shared evidence base.

OBJECTIVES

CLIFDEW-GRID enables partners to translate risk insights into action. By making displacement risks visible earlier and at subnational level, it supports anticipatory decision-making, more targeted planning, and faster allocation of crisis financing. The platform strengthens how risk signals inform operational response, helping ensure that resources are directed to the right places at the right time.

CLIFDEW is shedding light on the linkages between, climate, conflict and displacement, allowing investments in climate resilience where risks are greatest.
