ICPAC
Early Warning for Droughts and Floods in East Africa
ABOUT
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) strengthens regional disaster risk intelligence by advancing hazard modeling, impact estimation, and event-based climate storylines for droughts and floods in Eastern Africa. Anchored in the East Africa Hazard Watch, the initiative connects ensemble prediction systems with exposure and vulnerability data to generate actionable risk narratives. Within IGAD, these insights support climate services, disaster risk management authorities, and regional coordination mechanisms in strengthening preparedness and anticipatory action.
OBJECTIVES
CRAF’d support enables ICPAC to embed event-based climate storylines and impact modeling into operational forecasting workflows and the East Africa Hazard Watch platform. The project strengthens early warning systems, informs trigger design for anticipatory action, and enhances scenario-based planning across IGAD member states. By building technical capacity and institutional uptake, it ensures that risk information directly supports regional policy coordination and timely disaster response.
With support from CRAF’d, IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre is empowering the Horn of Africa with advanced climate modelling to mitigate disasters.
