DATA IN ACTION

With CRAF’d support, the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) now processes vast weather and climate datasets 95 per cent faster. This produces more reliable drought and flood forecasts, giving governments and responders extra time to act before lives and livelihoods are threatened.

Droughts and floods in East Africa are becoming more frequent and severe, yet early-warning systems often lag behind. Processing vast climate datasets can take days, delaying forecasts and leaving governments and responders less time to prepare.

With support from CRAF’d, ICPAC’s upgraded systems now process vast weather and climate datasets 95 per cent faster, while reducing cloud-computing costs by up to 50 per cent. As a result, life-saving early warnings can reach more people, more frequently, at a fraction of the cost.

ICPAC’s Strengthening Early Warning Systems for Anticipatory Action (SEWAA) Initiative, is deploying enhanced early-warning capabilities across Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Uganda, while testing generative AI to improve forecasts.

DATA THAT SAVES LIVES

ICPAC is a specialized institute of IGAD that provides climate services and early warnings to 11 East African countries. By equipping governments and communities with timely and actionable information, ICPAC plays a vital role in strengthening climate resilience and protecting lives and livelihoods across the region.
